International conference on Ebola, an invaluable opportunity to take stock of the situation and identify the way forward
The United Nations and the European Union (EU) will host a High-Level International Conference on Ebola in Brussels, on 3 March 2015.
Chaired by Neven Mimica, the EU Commissioner of International cooperation and Development and Helen Clark, the Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Conference will focus on:
- Sustaining the current Ebola response and preventing the spread of the virus;
- Identifying short-term actions to remedy the immediate consequences of the epidemic; and
- Examining longer-term social and economic reconstruction needs.
The event will be co-chaired by Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia, as well as Togo as Ebola coordinator of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the African Union.
The participants will also examine the “Ebola Recovery Assessment”, carried out by the World Bank, the African Development Bank and the United Nations system, under the leadership of UNDP – an inclusive, integrated and regional government-led process.
An Outcome Document will be published at the conclusion of the Conference.
In this outbreak over 9,500 people have died and about 24,000 have been infected by the deadly Ebola virus.
